Languages

At Fair Furlong Primary School, we believe that the teaching of Spanish helps foster an excitement and enjoyment of language. We aim for our teaching to inspire a curiosity in other countries and cultures, as well as provide children with the opportunity to communicate with people beyond their own community.

Our children are exposed to the Spanish language in the EYFS through games and songs related to the key curriculum areas. From KS2, the children then begin their journey into more formal language learning. The Spanish curriculum at Fair Furlong covers key areas including: Colours, body parts, classroom instructions, animals, numbers, food, hobbies, days of the week, word classes, family members, weather, Spanish Christmas and Spanish Easter. The children will be given opportunities to apply their knowledge through reading, writing, listening and speaking, with the strongest emphasis being on the latter.

Curriculum areas are revisited in each year group and the curriculum is driven by a strong progression framework to ensure that the children’s skills are built on each year. In Spanish lessons there is a strong emphasis on cooperative learning and it is given real purpose through our yearly, whole-school WOW event.

We aim for children to leave Fair Furlong Primary School with an enthusiasm and confidence for language learning, underpinned by an understanding of its value and culture.
